TRAILER ANALYSIS: Legend

Legend is a British crime/thriller written and directed by Brian Helegeland which is focused on the life of Reggie Kray, as he seeks to control the psychotic tendencies of his twin, Ronny Kray.

Trailer Analysis:

For the trailer analysis task i have chosen to look at the upcoming crime thriller; Legend.

I have chosen this trailer as I wanted to analyze a film trailer to a film that I haven't watched so that doesn't cloud my judgement, and also to see whether the trailer has done it's job to get me to watch the film. As the trailer did make me want to see the film, I now plan to watch the film after having seen the trailer to then see, if in reflection, whether the trailer was complimentary to the film or whether it gave too much away. I also chose the trailer as I felt it used some interesting techniques in order to present the film in a way that entertain and interests the audience. They have done this through techniques such as:

The voice over in the beginning is effective in explaining the narrative, however the technique of a narrator is only used at the beginning as speech from other characters also feature. I also think it is interesting that they chose a female to do the voice over as the main characters are two males. This may be because the female has a key role in the film, however I don't know this as I haven't seen the film. This is one of the questions that might make a viewer want to see the film: 'what relevance does the woman have?' There is also the fact that she has a strong London accent, adding to the theme and stereotypes used throughout the film towards Londoner's being rough and tough.

Another major technique to comment on about both the trailer and the film is the fact that the 'Kray Twins' have been cast with the same actor: Tom Hardy. This will draw may audience members in, due to Tom Hardy's status in the acting world already as well as wanting to see how he performs two different people who are meant to be talking to each other. The way they are both introduced in the trailer is also very effective and almost slightly comedic. The comedic idea is then strengthened through the use of the line 'Do you think we look alike?' while the audience obviously know its the same person.

The music used within the trailer is also an important feature as it helps to build suspense and the theme of the film. The music is in time with many of the fast movements in the trailer as well, while also being in time with many of the billing and credits.

For me I also feel the text saying 'based on a true story' has been put up consciously to make the reader more intrigued and question how such a thing could be true, especially to a more modern audience who may not know the story of the Kray Twins. It'll also appeal more stereotypically to a male audience as the idea of all of these gangster stories, violence and glamor being true would make them want to find out more.

Overall I feel that it is a trailer that would definitely draw an audience in due to all of the features mentioned above and I feel the most effective one is that Tom Hardy has been cast to play both twins.
