CHARACTER PROFILES: female protagonist

In this blog post I am going to list and give some details to a series of actresses who I feel would fit the ideal for playing the main female protagonist.

Firstly I think Emma Watson could play this character.

Emma Watson is a 25 year old British actress, most well known for playing the main female role, Hermione Granger, in the Harry Potter films.

Although she has participated in the massive blockbusters Harry Potter she was also the lead female in Perks of Being a Wallflower, which is why I chose her as one of my actresses. Perks of being a Wallflower is a 'coming of age' film which involves teenagers trying to find their ways in life which I feel that our film plot will be slightly about as well.

She is also a very well known actress, not only for acting and modeling but for also being a great campaigner, which I feel would benefit the film as she would have a massively positive reputation in the audience's eye.

Secondly I feel that Kaya Scodelario would also be a good actress to play the main protagonist in our film.

Kaya Scodelariois a 24 year old British actress who had her breakthrough performance on the E4 teen drama series Skins, who has now later become known for her role in the Maze Runner.

I have chosen her for one of our actresses as I feel that although Skins was a TV series instead of a film that it may have addressed similar issues involve conflict between friends, family and other relationships as well as illnesses. I also feel, like Perks of Being a Wallflower, Skins may have similar viewers to the viewers who may want to watch films as they would have similar target audiences in ages and interests.

Lastly, I also feel that Dakota Fanning would also portray our main female protagonist well through her performance.

Dakota is a 23 year old American actress who made her breakthrough performance at aged 7 in the film I am Sam from 2001.

However the reason I have chosen her for my character profile is because I watched her performance in the film The Runaways, as although it doesn’t have similar content to the plot ideas we have for our film, it is a drama and I feel that she plays her character very well, and that the character she is playing has to deal with many life issues which would also have to be portrayed in our character.

CINEMA LEAFLET

When going to the cinema two days ago to see Legend, in a small independent cinema in Devizes, they were handing out leaflets of upcoming films in order to spread awareness which I thought I would include on my blog as I fill it would be useful for the ancillary tasks.

Here I have scanned the leaflet onto the computer in order to show what the leaflet contains:

Here is the scan of the front page of the free leaflet. It is clearly advertising the upcoming film The Martian, however it also says on the top right the other things that it is inside advertising or informing you about; such as what's on, booking information and what films are coming soon. It also gives a list of film names; such as Fantastic Four, Hotel Transylvania 2, Pan, 'plus more' which has been advertised inside the leaflet.

As the front cover is primarily advertising the film The Martian, there is, for obvious reason, a picture of the main character from the film who is to be known as 'the martian'.

It also has the title of the leaflet 'Film News' as well as just above it, how long the leaflet is relevant for; this one being 'August-October 2015'

On the next page (left side of picture underneath) is an add for a free app, which would be used in order to create more awareness of what you can do at home before even coming to the cinema which would most likely be appealing due to time saving. It will also probably make people spend more money as they can order things quicker and more of it without having to queue for it.
On the other side of the page (right side of above picture) there is to advertisements for upcoming films that are to be showed in the cinema. This would be to spread awareness of the films and to tell the readers what the film is about to encourage them to spend their money by coming to see it. The first film advertised is 'The Transporter Refueled' staring Ed Skrein. The reason they may want to advertise this film more is due to the staring actor Skrein, being a new and upcoming actor meaning not many people would have heard or seen things he's been in before. The second film being advertised is the upcoming film 'Legend' staring Tom Hardy. I have spoken about this picture in previous posts, however like before I still feel it intrigues the audience as he is playing both twins as well as the film being 'based' on the true and well known stories of the Krays. Like the other film being advertised it talks of the plot of the film as well as talking about the producers and their awards.

***

Once turning the page over, you immediately see four move film advertisements, two on each page, which can be shown from the picture below. The first two films are called 'The Walk' and 'Hotel Transylvania 2'. One of the first thing that I notice of the advertisement of 'The Walk' is that it's 'a true story' which is shown right under the title, this automatically can intrigue the audience more as it can be exciting to think that such things are true. It also gives an insight to what the film is going to be about; 'twelve people have walked on the moon, but only one man'. This opening line would also be intriguing; twelve people but only one man? What does this mean?
The fact that Hotel Transylvania 2 is advertised shows that the cinema is a diverse cinema, screening things for a wide range of people as this is for children, whereas Legend, which is advertised on the previous page is for 18 years +. Like the other advertisements, this one gives some insight to what the film is about.

As well as targeting adults (Legend) and children (Hotel Transylvania 2) the cinema also advertises films for more of a teenage based audience which is evident to the fact that they have advertised The Scorch Trials. At the bottom of the advertisement there is a very dramatic line 'the maze was only the beginning'. This is in relation to the film prior to this 'The Maze Runner' which this film is then continuing. This line gives the impression that the audience saw nothing in the maze runner and that they have a lot more to come yet. This is done to excite the audience and make them more curious as to what is coming next.
Then Strange Magic is advertised, however with a lot less information than the previous ones. This could be due to the target audience being primarily children, meaning there is less information so it is easier for them to read and less boring. However the simplicity in description could also represent the simplicity of the film.

On the next page Sinister II is advertised which not only shows the variety of films that the cinema shows for different aged audiences but also the different genres, meaning not only do they gain wider audiences due to age, but taste as well. Like The Scorch Trials, Sinister II uses a tag line 'Once you see him, nothing can save you'. This reflects the genre and also from the use of the personal pronoun 'you' makes it more personal to the viewers, making it more scary as the horror is now involving them.
Hitman Agent 47 is also advertised which again is a different genre. From the image and title it suggests that is more of an action than anything due to the connotations of the word 'hitman' and images of the guns and soldiers. Like the rest it also gives a small description as to what the films plot line is.

On the next page is firstly The Martian, which is what was advertised in the front page. Due to it being on the front page and also in the exact middle of the leaflet suggests that the film is an important and popular one. There is another picture of 'the martian' that the film is focused on, which is set next to the information and description of the film.
Below is the film Vacation, which is slightly different to the other films advertised in the leaflet as it has more of a collage of images where as the previous ones have used one big image. One of the images shows a group of people which gives the audience the impression that these are the people going on the 'vacation'. The use of this word also immediately shows that the film is American due to the choice of word instead of 'holiday'

Next to be shown is the film No Escape, starring Owen Wilson and Pierce Brosnan, which you can clearly see from the image as well as the caption above the film title. The advert is very dark and grey which I think may be reflecting the tone of the film. However, the image of the man behind (Brosnan) holding a gun suggests that it may have elements of action and a fast paced tone also. The tagline 'A Nation In Revolt' also implies what the film may involve... a nation revolting?
Underneath is the film The Visit which due to the bottom of the letter on the image 'DON'T come out of your room after 9:30 pm' suggests that it could possibly be a mystery film, however due to the colours of the advert and the words used in the description such as 'disturbing' and 'terribly wrong' could also suggest it being more of a horror/thriller.
There is also the film Fantastic Four which is the latest superhero film to be released. The image supporting the advert is evenly spread so that you can see each member of the fantastic four. The title has also been cleverly done as the second A of fantastic is also the 4, which is the logo for the heroes. There is also a description of the film as well as introducing the characters.
Below that is the advert for the film Absolutely Anything, which is a very broad and open title, which could literally mean 'absolutely anything'.  The layout to this advert is again different to the rest, which is important to stand out, as the title (top right) is the opposite corner to the description (bottom left) which is also the same for the two images (top left and bottom right). Luckily for the film would already have a number of audience members due to the well known and popular actor Simon Pegg starring.

***

On the last double pages, there are two more film advertisements as well as a separate advert for advertising your own business.
The first of the last two films, is Pan, a new adaptation of the Disney story Peter Pan. The image is very kid-friendly, intriguing them with the use of a flying ship. As the film is based on the Peter Pan story, there would already be a massive fanbase due to the story being so well know, however as it takes a different route it would increase the audience even more as people would want to see how they have done it differently. However there is also a downfall to the story being so well know, is that some people may feel that it is overdone, as there are many films and stories based on the original, this is why they have tried to make the film different. The tagline 'every legend has a beginning' also suggests that they are starting before the original story of Peter Pan.
Underneath is the film The Man From U.N.C.L.E. which appears to be an action like some of the previous adverts shown. There is a list of actors involved in the film as well as a description of the film just above. As well as that there is also some named films that the director has been involved with (Sherlock Homes and Snatch), showing what the style of the film may be like.
On the right of the picture above shows what was on the last page of the leaflet, which isn't in relation to film, however is merely to gain more money and more people involved with the cinema in as many ways possible.

Lastly, the image above shows what the back of the leaflet which is information about the cinema for people who would want to see any of the films previously listed. The information listed it; what website to go to make bookings, an information phone line, prices for tickets depending on age and 3D/CD screenings as well as information about conferences and private screening which shows that the back page is advertising not the screenings but the cinema itself and all of its facilities in order to widen the knowledge of it and gain more money from it.

AUDIENCE PROFILE:

From analysing my research which I have collected through my surveys; my target audience is primarily females (aged 16-26). However this doesn't mean that males and females of other ages won't watch the film. The romance/drama genre is aimed towards a niche audience however the plot is one which everyone can watch and enjoy. My target audience stretches to people in their mid twenties because of themes of mental health that will be involved.

Below is an example of a typical audience member:

 Name: Amelia Wright
Age: 17
Occupation: Student
Favourite film genre: Romance
Favourite music genre: Pop
Amelia is a 17 year old, studying Dance, Drama and English at college and hoping to pursue a career in dance. She enjoys dancing, acting, singing and playing sport and is often going to the cinema with her friends. She spends a lot of time being social and focusing on performances she is taking part on, but likes to relax at home watching a film. She has a wide collection of Comedy DVDs, her favourite films being The Notebook and all Harry Potter films and is always looking for great new films which she watches through online downloads or Netflix.

I think that Amelia fits the target audience for our film as she loves... and I believe our plot of a tragic love story would really intrigue her and the mental illness theme would interest her as she would enjoy learning more about it through the film. I also know from my research that she has watched most of the films I have taken influence from and thoroughly enjoyed them. Also knowing that she is enthusiastic with performing and acting, I think that our film would fit her interests as she can relate to the characters and imagine what it would be like from their perspectives as they are of similar ages.

LEGEND: review on previous analysis

On a previous blog post I did a trailer analysis on the film 'Legend' and spoke briefly about the voiceover by the woman at the beginning of the film. Yesterday I saw the film in the cinema and unlike before, when I was unsure of the relevance and effect of the voiceover, I know see the full purpose and relevance to it in the trailer.

Previously I said:

'The voice over at the beginning of the trailer is effective in explaining the narrative, however the technique of a narrator is only used at the beginning as speech from other characters also feature. I also think it is interesting that they chose a female to do the voice over as the main characters are two males. This may be because the female has a key role in the film, however I don't know this as I haven't seen the film. This is one of the questions that might make a viewer want to see the film: 'what relevance does the woman have?' There is also the fact that she has a strong London accent, adding to the theme and stereotypes used throughout the film towards Londoner's being rough and tough.'

Now I can answer these questions and purpose of the narrative. The narrative, all though is questionable in the trailer is significant due to the fact that the woman speaking is actually the character of Reggie Kray's wife, a main character in the film. She also not only narrates in the trailer but narrates in sections of the film and the film is shown as if it's the story she is telling. The narrative that features in the trailer also features in the beginning of the film. Her East-End accent is due to the 'rough, tough' area that she and the Krays are from, which is what I suspected before having even seen the film

I also previously said:

Overall I feel that it is a trailer that would definitely draw an audience in due to all of the features mentioned in this blog psot and I feel the most effective one is that Tom Hardy has been cast to play'

This comment is clearly true in my opinion and the trailer has clearly done its job ,as I have since seeing the trailer, then gone and paid to see it in the cinema and would then continue to spend money on the film as I want to buy it on DVD once it is out. So Legend is a clear example of a successful trailer in my opinion.

SURVEYS: up and running!!!

After editing my survey so that I can do to separate, more relevant ones and they're both up and running, meaning people are now beginning to fill it in! I will put more blog posts up once I am getting more responses.

I have posted the link to the survey on my Facebook page in order to get more people to fill it out and so people can share it and even more people can then fill it out. It is a very easy and helpful way to get share links. Here is a screenshot of the post I made:

Underneath is a picture of the second survey in which I posted on Facebook.

Here is a link to my first survey which I have asked people to film out; it is primarily about cinemas: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GXDQ8FV
And here is a link to my second survey which I have asked people to fill out; which is primarily about films and their trailers: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BLWK2K9
